La Lola Loca will have you livin’ la vida loca. The question is whether or not this new dining experience is crazy good or crazy bad. La Lola Loca rolled up to FGCU Thursday, Oct. 11 and officially opened her windows for service Monday, Oct. 15, offering students a modern twist on Latin cuisine straight out of a food truck.
FGCU is stepping up their game by wanting to meet the students’ needs with providing a new dining experience that is affordable and efficient. It’s a smart idea to have a means for which students can obtain food on campus via a food truck. With McDonalds, Taco Bell, and most recently Jimmy John’s being the only few late night dining options for students, a food truck accessible throughout late hours of the night in North Lake Village seems logically genius.
If Moe’s and Chipotle had a love child, La Lola Loca would be it. Mimicking the cilantro rice and fresh ingredients one would find at Chipotle, mixed with the classic quesadillas and burritos one would find at Moe’s, is it possible the La Lola Loca could finally be the mediator between the feuds?
The real question is whether or not this stuff is good. I went all out when trying their menu -- because, let’s be honest, if I’m going to tell you my opinion, I better have savored it.
This crazy lady serves up three different types of tacos for $2.75 each: Chipotle BBQ pulled pork with cilantro ranch slaw, grilled chicken with salsa fresca and spiced barbacoa beef with fire roasted corn salsa. The spiced barbacoa hardly enlivened my taste buds with its heat, but nonetheless, it was still flavorful.
I would stay away from the chicken with salsa fresca. It wasn’t anything special, and to be honest, quite bland. The chipotle BBQ pulled pork, on the other hand, was the best out of the bunch. The sweet and smoky flavor of the pork combined with a ranch slaw definitely made it a winner in my book.
Chips and guacamole. Need I say more? You can never go wrong with it. Just make sure that you’re aware that the price is $3.95. In my opinion, they give you tons of chips, just not enough guac.
I highly recommend you buy the Mexican soda called Jarritos. Their flavors are pineapple, lime, and fruit punch. Let’s just say I tried the pineapple flavored one and now have a new favorite drink.
If you want to end on a sweet note, then get the churro dippers. You can’t go wrong with fried dough sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and accompanied by Mexican hot chocolate sauce. Who could deny Latin finger food straight from a truck? As they say, you’ll go loco just trying to decide what to eat.
